I think most vaguely recall the Starter Jacket craze of the mid 1990s. I myself had a San Antonio Spurs starter jacket, but the most sought after jacket had to have been the Charlotte Hornets selection. We remember the cool colors and patterns, the huge team logo on the back, and most importantly we remember the metal zipper that was the Starter logo. What most don't remember, or have tried to forget was that people literally killed other people for Starter jackets. On the same token, people were getting held up at gun point and refused to give up their jacket. This was not a one time occurrence, this happened frequently. So much so that parents were scared of buying the jackets for their kids because they were scared that they were going to get rolled.
People murdered for these jackets, I still can't get over that. At what point during the prison sentence do you think the, "What was I thinking?" kick in? Is there someone out there who doesn't regret it at all? Does one lose street cred when he shows up 15 years later (2010), tries to reacquaint with old friends and is known as the guy that went away for shooting someone for a Starter jacket. When released from prison, is there a culture shock when they realized Starter is now being sold at Wal-Mart and being endorsed by a 2nd tier NFL quarterback? And most importantly, does the killer buy a starter jacket on ebay for $25?
Conclusion: At least people who murdered for a pair of Jordan shoes would still be relevant with their motive. Shoes become 'retro' and 'old-school.' I am not sure Starter jackets will ever reach vintage status. But if they do comeback... I'm all in.
